Last time that I sat down at a sewing machine to do anything other than a seam repair was around 1974. I vaguely remember sewing a halter top as a Home Ec assignment and I also remember it not going well. Mumsie bailed me out by fixing the crooked seams and smoothlng the rumpled curve. In my ‘Always on the go’ career days, alterations, repairs, ironing is why God gave us dry cleaners.
Undaunted from my early experience of sewing, after all these I decided to make new sear cushions for our dining chairs. It took me about a year to gain the confidence. We carried M’s Singer Fashionmaté sewing machine down in one of our 8 suitcases. I used it a couple of times to repair rips in M’s work short. Then graduated to replacing zippers. With tutoring from a YouTube video, I was more successful than I expected. Thank goodness for YouTube. Seriously, our life here would be very different without its invaluable resource.
The original dining seat cushions were in very poor condition. However it made for a handy template. Firstly, we needed new foam. The stores at the Border occasionally sell cheap foam mattresses. We had seen them in the past; yet when we went to look for them, not a one around! Friends recommended a store in San José called Lazaro. It is the ‘go to’ store for fabrics, vinyl and home decorating products. Foam and interior cotton lining was obtaine. We had purchased the fabric cover at Beverly’s in Monterey last November. I found a very helpful YouTube video and I forged ahead. The finished product improved in look as I progressed through the 4 cushion. If I can ask one thing...when you come to visi, please don’t look too closely.
