December 25, 2017 is our first Christmas as newlyweds in our new home. If you'd told me 4 years ago that I'd celebrate Christmas in Costa Rica with a wonderful, caring man, I'd say that seems an unlikely dream. Fortunately for me, I believe in unlikely dreams. Also of great fortune, M believes strongly in the power of intention. It has been his dream for more than a decade to be right here, right now. I'm lucky enough to be swept up in vision.
After our morning coffee on the deck, we dove into a vigorous session of weeding! As I mentioned earlier, weeding around the house & parking area will be a constant task. (And you thought life here was all about lazy, sunny days.) It is very satisfying to stand up (rather stiffly) and survey a weed-free zone on the entirety of the gravel area.
It is ironic that I'm weeding at all. I still recall hot afternoons at our home in Petrolia, where my mother had me out weeding the garden beds. I swore to myself that when I grew up, I'd never pull another weed again. I've been really successful (up until this point) in my determination. Another sworn life goal (as I was shoveling snow from the driveway on cold, dark winter evenings) was that I'd never shovel snow as an adult. I'm jubliant to report that I have very successfully achieved this goal. It's funny... I don't really mind weeding here. I take a zen approach...the weeds can grow to their fullest potential, just not on my gravel. (Funny coincidence, the Town of Petrolia was incorporated on December 25, 1866 according to Wikipedia.)
Just after noon, we packed up the cooler with beer, watermelon & water. Grabbed our hats, towels & hammocks and headed to the beach. Mike & Liz hosted their annual Christmas day BBQ for the community. It is quite the bash with the BBQ cooking since 8 am: "cerdo," plantains baked in their skins, rice, beans, a variety of cole slaws. And a Santa Claus pinata for the kids.
