Often we hear the coyotes screaming off in the distance. We are sleeping downstairs now. (The painters were supposed to arrive on Monday and start in the interior upstairs so we moved everything into our downstairs bedroom/bath. No show on the painters yet. Mañana.) So last night, we were lying in bed asleep when a coyote screamed right outside our window. Then the rest of the pack replied and it sounded like they were very close. If the dogs of hell were coming for us, I imagine that it would sound very similar. Michael jumped up with the flashlight and shone it out the window along the bottom of the property.
No sign of them. They were moving fast as the next calls were coming from the forest behind the chicken coop. Yikes, it was a blood curdling scream. Not like the high pitched howl of the coyotes in Carmel Valley but a piercing, hungry utterance.
We were concerned for the chicks, however, we weren't going to head out in the dark to check. Our motto is, "Don't venture past the driveway at night." The quebrada is very close to the east side of the house. I saw a small toad with bulging black eyes jump in front of my feet when I checked on the chicks around 7 pm. There are huge toads that climb out of the quebrada after dark. We are not sure if they are poisonous and we don't want to test it. Fortunately, the chicks were OK this morning. Eating well and growing.
More adventures in the wilds of Costa Rica. :)
