We awoke to a very vocal chat between a pair of regular visitors. One of the toucans was down in a papaya tree near the Banana Grove. The other was up in a tree near the edge of the property. They were having a very intense conversation for about 5 minutes. Finally the toucan in the papaya tree flew up to the other one.
Our avian neighbors are Toco Toucans, the largest in the toucan family. Their bills measure from 6-9" and the bill represents 30-50% of its body size. That is proportionally larger than any other bird. The are omnivores, however, preferring fruit. And they really like our papayas. Fortunately, they are eating from a very tall tree that we would not be able to harvest.
According to Wikipedia, toucans are very social that they spend time sparring with their bills, tag-chasing and calling, during the long time it takes for fruit to digest.
I guess our pair had a good breakfast.
I'm so happy that we can have a conversation this way too. I just figured out how to comment. It's great to get a "light bulb" moment for an idea to post.
This is soooo Wonderful to watch and listen to this adventure you and M are having. It warms my heart and embraces me with the love you have. I just discovered how to Comment!
